Like not being allowed to kill someone. Some people have to be forced to be at least not bad, because they do not have good sense. Actually, someone who believes that democracy is a good form of government, believes that we live by the rule of men..majority rules, right?. A constitutional republic is very specifically about not being subject to the capriciousness of the rule of men. In other words, the rule of law. Though it was probably lost in the noise for most liberals, this has been a major issue that conservatives have had with Obama. From the early days of his presidency he has discarded the rule of law and ruled by presidential mandate. And he has promised to do it even more during the remainder of his term. But there is a very important difference in what you believe in and what I believe in. I believe in laws that protect and defend the rights of individuals. It is perfectly valid to use force (whether actual force or through laws) to stop someone from violating your individual rights. That is one of the few truly legitimate roles of government. It is something completely different to use force (laws) to violate my individual rights so that you can give my money to some idiot "artist" who tosses a crucifix in a jar of piss and calls it "art". so yes, we agree that the law has implied force behind it. We disagree, almost diametrically, on when it is legitimate to use that force. simplified: Using force to defend the rights of individuals (forcing someone to not be bad) = legit Using force to make someone be nice = not-legit (using force to make someone act in a nice, charitable, caring, harmonious way, violates that person's right to be himself and to own that which he has earned)
