Just based on the sheer number of investors there are, you are going to have some that outperform by chance. I do believe that some outperform by skill, but not that many at all.

The fact remains that if you look at investors like mutual funds and hedge funds that are required to disclose their returns, consistent and significant outperfomance over long periods (say a decade) is very rare indeed.

The only documented example (that I know of) of a "system" that worked was the old Value Line rating system. But strangely enough when they established a Fund that used the same system, it didn't work very well.
