an investor's role in the market is to provide capital to businesses.

Hardly. Look at Apple's stock. Loads of investors have been in and out of the stock over the past 2 decades (not months, DECADES), and as far as I know Apple hasn't used its stock to raise capital ever in that time.

When you talk about "investors" are you referring to the man or woman in the street type of investor or are you referring to a major organization or financial institution that wishes to obtain a large or major stake in a public company ?
