Yes, that's more or less their obligation, but if such obligation can be based on the "plain meaning" of the words I think they're off the hook as to having to do further research on it. In other words if only scientists know what the context of "hide the decline" is then the defendant I think will prevail. If the Plaintiff can show that this was a term that was commonly explained in the mass media prior to the alleged defamation then it might be a different story.
