Lincoln was indeed a 'republican', but in that day and time republicans were the progressive/liberal party

the democrats were the slave owners (aka the social conservatives, aka the right wingers)

the parties have flip-flopped over time

in today's time Lincoln would be a Dem/progressive, in no way anything like today's republiCON/teabaggers
