This is a subject, a thread, for ideas. We know such a tiny percent of how the brain works, that it's hard to come to any sort of agreement that matters. So speculation is 'pure' speculation. I'm not invested in any of my opinions, just throwing stuff against the wall.

An executive function at many levels sounds problematic, like human society.

I've had the thought that the consciousness, what we think of as 'me', is primarily our social interface, and not a lot more. It's the kernel to interact and cooperate with each other, which is a really important strength of the species. Again... thinking out loud.
