suggested the way to keep an economy going was to have it constantly at war
Some where in the 70's I read an economic article about where would Germany be now economically if they had not started WW11.

The conclusion was that the war drained money out of the economy, and that the country would have been further ahead without WW11.

Look at our spending in Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan.
Vietnam was good for the helicopter business and for supply ships.
In Iraq and Afghanistan we we have spent billions upon billions on projects in those countries that did not benefit the US economy. (Think, roads, bridges, schools, and infrastructure projects that had no benefit to the US at home).

Money spent at home goes into circulation and helps the US economy. Consider a new bridge in California, or one in Iraq as an example.

The Libertarians have good ideas about avoiding war...but it will be hard sell to the far right.

OT ** you may be thinking of Orwell's "1984" where watching the war updates was mandatory and Hate Week was an event "designed to increase the hatred for the current enemy of the Party, as much as possible, whichever of the two opposing superstates that may be."

I think I'll reread 1984
