SAMSUNG MAKES QUIET PUSH FOR NEW MOBILE OS TIZEN TO CHALLENGE ANDROID
By Youkyung Lee, Associated Press - 15 November 2013

Associated Press writer Youkyung Lee provided an overview of the Tizen Developer Summit 2013 in Seoul,
South Korea. Lee stated that the event brought together app developers and Tizen backers from Samsung,
Intel and mobile operators. Lee noted that Samsung’s ambition for Tizen doesn’t stop at the smartphone
it also sees the software in cars, fridges and televisions. Lee included commentary from Mark Skarpness,
director of systems engineering at Intel Corp., who told the conference, “[With Tizen], you can build an
application once and relatively easily move from device to device.”

I can see Samsung falling on their rear end with Tizen.

Samsung Won’t Dump Android for Tizen, Says Jefferies

Following Samsung Electronic’s ( 005930KS) having dumped Google’s ( GOOG) Android last month for its
second generation of smartwatches, the “Gear 2,” Jefferies & Co. analyst Hyunwoo Doh today writes that
Samsung is likely to stick with Android for its smartphones for the foreseeable future.

There has been speculation in past that Samsung might pursue the “Tizen” operating system as an alternative
for its smartphones to Google’s Android. Last month, Samsung announced the Gear 2 would no longer use
Android and instead is running Tizen, perhaps raising some suspicion that Samsung will go further with Tizen
in future. (TheVerge’s Dan Seifert has coverage of the Gear 2 unveiling.)
