I don't know how safe money market accounts at brokerages. One hopes that some combination of accountants and government regulators keeps them honest, and that the government insurance covers money market funds.

I think the regular accounts are in commercial paper that is highly rated by Moody's or whoever. 90-day loans.

But I just figure, why worry if Sears can't refinance its paper because all their credit card holders took bankruptcy? Why not have my money backed by T-bills? A small likelihood--but then I don't expect my house to burn down either. So I sacrifice maybe a third of a percent--I don't know exactly.

Simon, >>There must be a pile of IRA money sitting in MM accts. if you can't find stocks going up to buy, and you can't short.

You can buy funds that are shorting stocks...I don't know how many folks know this. If and when we get in a bear market the press will educate folks.
