Historically Ukraine is composed of many minorities who the Russians forced to adopt the Russian language.As an example in the regions north of Romania in most cities over 30% of the population was Jewish. This is very similar to the neo-Nazi Golden Dawn party in Greece that enjoys a 7% support among the electorate. It's interesting that mainstream US media vociferously condemn Golden Dawn, with a number of articles describing its depredations. They are silent about evidently worse parties in Ukraine. I guess the Internet age has killed objective media almost everywhere. The battle for eyeballs has morphed into a battle to be likeable to your perceived main audience.
