<<<< political gold to campaign on a promise of free lunches forever, you know, no taxes>>>>>

BINGO! Even though I know you didn't mean to - you have captured it perfectly!

Both sides want a free lunch as you have so eloquently put it. I'm going to tell you a true story that I learned about last weekend just to see if you understand why some people don't want to pay more taxes; ..........A landowner just purchased two 40 acre parcels. That's 80 acres. That amount of acreage allowed the landowner to apply for a property tax exemption for timber production. They now pay virtually no property tax on this piece. But to get the exemption, the landowner had to clear a 100 foot buffer of all brush and had to prune up all the trees. No other landowner has to clear the brush. The timber companies in the area don't ever clear the brush or limb up the trees. But here's the deal Metacomet; the landowner didn't have to pay to clear the brush - they got a grant from the federal government to do it. Clearing the brush does nobody any good - NOT even the landowner. ..........Now you explain to me why I should pay my federal taxes to a landowner so they can get an exemption to pay no tax?
