I have been using WIN 8 and then the upgrade to WIN 8.1 for months now, since my ancient laptop running XP finally died. The most important trick to taming it for me is the Windows Key-d command which opens the desktop. I have all programs I use on the desktop and never ever go to the tiles. Everything is done from and on the desktop. The next most useful trick is Windows Key-i which brings out the Settings-Control Panel-Power sidebar from which I shut down or sleep the box.

Yes, it is a little more cumbersome when saving because I never want to save to the cloud, which seems to be the default preference, so I have to make an additional click or two, but otherwise, it runs fine.

Fortunately, most of the major vendors still offers WIN7 on machines you order from them. I've been purchasing workstations with WIN7 preloaded, so it avoids the WIN8 mess entirely...
