My HS girlfriend had had a child before I met her, and put it up for adoption (she was Catholic, so abortion wasn't an option). She was very sad about having to do that, but as a consequence, was totally religious about taking her birth control pills.

I was watching a special on gangs in Oakland last night. It only takes a second to see how greatly uneducated they are. They have no idea what reality is and their values are like 7th century tribal values. Machismo, being tough, revenge. They find this stuff exiting. Most of us would find it repugnant or just plain old boring. They know so little and live in a teensy weensy world. Their entertainment is very simplistic and too often base. Two things: 1) A person cannot do what they cannot understand. That is why the right wings tough love will never work, nor has it. But then the right wing never reads social science. 2) Entertainment and behavior changes as people change. Chess is no fun if you do not Know how to play. Uneducated folks get their pleasure in a much more simplistic manner. Kids who have a solid early education often actually red books for fun. You will never see a gang banger doing that. We must go into those barrios and help the people with money, jobs, education and literally change their entire culture. I know I always go back to this, but look how American Jewish kids live their lives! Look what they do for entertainment. The don't find gang banging fun or spinning wheelies or building low riders. They are into books, sex, drugs and rock and roll like a normal healthy kid should be. When they are not going to school.
