Bread, have you seen "12 Years a Slave"? I think you might find it interesting, not for the degradation of the slaves, but for the economic and social structures that kept them enslaved. Northup worked on three plantations, a cotton plantation, a sugar cane plantation and a lumber plantation.

The movie really shows that human beings can get used to anything, being enslaved or being slave masters.
