Yakov: RE: "An earlier article about AMD claimed that overall expenses (not sure what wasincluded) were $250k/yr for DUV vs. $25k/yr for i-line. I like your 2:1 ratio much better."

I suspect some of the discrepancy is due to what you'd call a "learing
curve" for DUV.

As for equipment lead times, I'm being quoted numbers like 12 months
for DUV steppers and 18months for scanners. I-line is probably about the same or 1-3 months less.

As for DUV/i-line ratio I think 4:1 may be reasonable for an advanced
microprocessor. For DRAM it may be higher, guessing 6 or 7:1. This
is because DRAMs are periodic, repetitive structures (one cell repeated millions of times) and this allows off-axis illumination and
phase shift reticles to extend the life of i-line tools.

It will be interesting to hear the next Cymer conference call. I seem
to remember in the last one the CEO said that only one Company, Samsung, was using Cymer Lasers in production. I hope that number
has gone up significantly in the last few months. R&D sales will only
carry Cymer so far.
