Kirk, Recently for three years I worked as one of the managers of a medium size grocery store.

Young people tend to spend money and food stamps frivolously. Too much snack food , frozen pizza and Mt. Dew.

But of the food stamp recipients in this county.....over one half are elderly, disabled people in wheelchairs or military vets.(messed up from Viet Nam)

The typical older person is retired and getting about $600 to $700 a month in social security benefits and they do qualify for food stamps. For a two person household it comes to about $180.00 a month in stamps.

About 25% of the recipients are one parent households and their shopping habits vary greatly. They tend to use a lot of coupons.

10% of the food stamp recipients are just plain stupid and nothing will cure that.It always amazed me that such an impoverished population would have money for a cell phone, and money for body art (tattoos), and at the same time try to live off of junk food. They might be employable, but I don't know who would hire them. .

I don't know how to solve the food stamp program, unless it were made to look like the S.N.A.P. program for young children. Its a very good program with a very limited food formulary. (No junk food at all....when that program specifies a 16oz box of Wheaties...nothing else can be substituted.).Usually there are only about 20 items that can be purchased under the SNAP program.
