"we SF Bay area hippies studied eastern philosophy."

Never studied philosophy. Wouldn't have become a hippie if I knew that was required>>

Too bad. You missed the best part.

The entire movement was a philosophical movement. We were rejecting 10,000 years of culture and thought. It was quite a ride.

But as I always explain to people, 1/3 of the hippies were rejecting society (the philosophical hippies) and 1/3 of the hippies had been rejected by society (hells angels), and 1/3 were just along for the scene, and we let them all in as we had a big tent philosophy i.e. the entire planet.

But that did confuse the straight society, and where many got the wrong impression of what was going on as they focused on the ones society had rejected and their antics, or the ones just sort of wandering around.
