I always feel like I'm drowning in religion in this country- most of it infantile and stupid.

Just because stupid people interpret the OT in certain ways today doesn't mean that it was written with that intent. There was no one intent for all the different parts of the OT, and to claim that there was is just wrong. I don't doubt that there were stupid people way back when who interpreted it in analogous ways as stupid people today, and I don't doubt that there were power hungry fearful people who used it to try to control events and other people. I also don't doubt that there smart and decent people who interpreted and used it in other ways.

But, as you say, it appears highly unlikely that either of us will change our minds about this, and at the end of the day, it won't change the universe if we stick to our own POV, so, in the inimitable words of Mr. Lennon, Let it be.

There are very few pockets of sanity regarding religion in this country. I find insanity with in-laws. One has converted to Messianic Judaism and she and her cohorts really think that it is Judaism.with Jesus as the Savior. (You notice, that out of respect, I capitalized savior in the text). There is a Yiddish word that describes this group of people and the others you have mentioned: Meshugginah--which translates as 'crazy'.
