To me, also ignorant of Crimea's history, it does seem a reasonable case that the USA should not dictate via Victoria Nuland who runs Ukraine and therefore Crimea. It's USSR putting nukes in Cuba, but actually, more like in Texas. If USSR was conducting secret operations to get Texas into the Warsaw Pact, by inducing murderous riots and backing particular thugs, it would not be surprising to see a USA federal military action.
