I'm afraid you sound a bit like the creationists here- trying to insist the Bible is a relevant as evolution, in a science class, because both things are "faith" based.

These sentences are one of the reasons this forum is simply not the place to discuss this. At least not seriously. We've all learned the arts of quick quips.

We live in a culture that believes deeply in science as a way of knowing. If you don't, then you must be some sort of wacko. I'm there; you're there; most of us are there in our daily lives regardless of our professed religious beliefs. Rorty's point, at least at this level of the conversation, is that we don't know beyond our own cultural and historical location as to the truth of those statements. We're quite comfortable with our conclusions and all the results seem to indicate we are correct.

To change the subject a bit, do tribes still create foundation myths that tell them the meaning of tribal existence? Of course, the American tribe, as one illustration, is full of such. These are stories, narratives, as to what it means to be an American. And some are better than others. And some of us bring different criteria to measure stories. That's one of the consequences of the enormous diversity in this tribe. You can, if you wish, invoke the old canard from introductory anthropology courses about the Nacirema. You may recall that tribe.

But these conversations here are not much better than late night college talkathons. That's one of the reasons, but not the only one, that they are confessional.
