Or in Win 7 right click the desk top / personalize / sounds. You can run through the list and change them to your preference or unselect them all together. What op system are you using. I don't see anything special set on or off here, I've never personalized anything. The sounds that is occurring unexpectedly is Windows/Device Connect. I'm sure you've all heard it loads of times, its the ring that occurs when you attach a device to the PC via a USB connection. It seems to happen randomly, so there isn't any pattern that I can discern yet.
