Yes -- it was a big waste of money. They had it as a way to gratify their own egos.

Well, there is nothing wrong with aestetically pleasing surroundings. It's a question of cost. Should the company spend thousands for a single piece of "art" or $30-100 for a nice print or poster?

Believe it or not, I actually agree with you here, in principal (except for that cultural wasteland part).
