Apple's not going to bother competing with free, but it sounds like a lot of your complaints about iPads could be resolved by adding a keyboard. If keyboard / trackpad is the main driver of chrome book sales, Apple should be able to address that fairly easily. All's that's needed is better pointer support. Then maybe a bigger screen.
