>> Percentage depletion allowance:

That is not an "oil subsidy". In a classic tax case, years ago, the owner of a garbage dump was allowed to use percentage depletion based on a hole in the ground which was being filled with garbage. I claim percentage depletion every year for brine extracted from our land. It isn't about oil and/or gas.

>> The foreign tax credit:

Which pretty much every taxpayer gets if they happen to pay foreign taxes.

>> Expensing intangible drilling costs:

These costs which otherwise would be deductible in the form of depreciation. Not unlike Microsoft (and every other software company) does with the software it develops, which is expensed as "research & development".

>> Domestic manufacturing tax deduction

No more an "oil subsidy" than it is a subsidy to any other manufacturing corporation. If Congress wants to do away with it, fine, but it doesn't affect oil companies any more than it does P&G or Corning.

The major oil companies lost percentage depletion in 1974. Smaller companies and royalty owners still get this.

The domestic mfg tax deduction and foreign tax credits aren't limited to the energy industry.

Intangible drilling costs are similar to mine development costs and for some time you have to capitalize a portion of them. But it doesn't matter, its a timing matter relating to when you get to deduct your costs.

Union Leader to Keystone XL Opponents in Congress: "Enough is Enough!"

Modern liberals despise people who work with their hands.

A top union leader has had enough of Keystone XL pipeline opposition in Congress and isn’t going to take it anymore.

Terry O'Sullivan, the general president of Laborers' International Union of North America (LIUNA), lashed out at House Members who sent a letter to Secretary of State John Kerry opposing the Keystone XL pipeline, declaring that they will “ feel the power” of the union this November.

O’Sullivan responded to the letter by sending a letter of his own to union members in their Congressional districts:

To all proud, strong, and united LIUNA brothers and sisters, I say, enough is enough! Our members and their families are angry, disappointed, and disillusioned with out-of-touch, job-killing politicians who choose to side with environmental extremists over work for our members. These so-called “friends” of ours are destroying good-paying work opportunities with family-supporting benefits, at a time when LIUNA members are trying to put food on their tables, keep roofs over their heads, and maintain middle-class lifestyles.

For every action, there is a reaction, and our reaction to this frontal assault on our way of life needs to be loud and clear: If you do not stand with us, we sure as hell will not stand with you!

Five Environmental Impact Studies conducted by President Obama’s own State Department have all been clear: building the Keystone XL Pipeline won't significantly increase the amount of greenhouse gases released into the atmosphere. It is outrageous that Congressman [x] chooses to ignore the facts in order to fight against the jobs of hard working LIUNA members. Indeed, it seems that Keystone XL Pipeline opponents will never accept any facts that don’t support their opinion.

You know better than anyone that unemployed construction workers desperately need the work that would be generated by the Keystone XL Pipeline. For thousands of LIUNA members, this isn’t just another pipeline, it’s a lifeline!

Yet many pipeline opponents dismiss these jobs—your jobs—as “dirty,” “temporary,” and of little “real” value to our economy. To them, the work you do, and the careers you have chosen, can and should be sacrificed in favor of a radical environmental agenda that will do nothing to reduce the dangers of climate change.

[Y]our member of Congress has chosen to side with hard-core anti-Keystone organizations rather than with hard working LIUNA members and their families.

Both labor unions and the business community want this project approved. Both understand that the Keystone XL pipeline will create thousands of jobs and grow the economy. It shouldn't be held hostage to in O'Sullivan's words a "radical environmental agenda."

Bill Maher is Shocked! Shocked! That Crime 'Plummeting' While More Criminals Sent to Prison

Leave to Bill Maher to revive an amusing complaint on his HBO show during a discussion with his guests about crime and punishment.

It's been so long since I've heard this venerable liberal chestnut, I thought they'd gotten wise and stopped trotting it out, much as liberals seldom say any more how "frightened" they are, though it used to be one of their favorite words. (Recall, for example, how Reagan left them petrified) (Video after the jump)

[iframe width="500" height="281" title="MRC TV video player" src="http://www.mrctv.org/embed/126537" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen=""][/iframe]

My apologies to any neighbors who may have been awakened by my guffaws after hearing this from Maher --

MAHER: I think it's also interesting, we were talking a little bit with Pussy Riot (alluding to earlier guests from Russian rock band) there about prison and I didn't want to tell 'cause I didn't want to brag, that as far as the percentage of people thrown into prison, Russia is eighth and America is number one.

GUEST MATT TAIBBI: Oh yeah.

MAHER (pumping arm in mock cheer): USA, USA, USA. And there's something very perverse about that because not only is that a horrifying statistic in itself, but the fact is that crime in the last 20 years is down...

TAIBBI: Yeah ...

MAHER: ... constantly plummeting and yet the prison population keeps going up.

Assume for a moment the situation was reversed -- instead of crime "constantly plummeting," it was the number of inmates in prisons that was in steep decline. Shortly thereafter, crime became far worse across the nation, to the point that it was unsafe to leave your home and Hollywood began cranking out new "Death Wish" sequels.

Do you think Maher might thenconnect the dots between empty prisons and criminals run amok?

Are crowded prisons anything to celebrate? Surely not. But government has no higher duty than to protect its citizens and it is beyond disingenuous for liberals to complain about the high rate of incarceration in the US when they've done so much to create the conditions for it.

It wasn't until the '60s that crime was a serious problem in this country and worsening lawlessness was fueled by several dynamics abetted by liberals -- Supreme Court rulings that put the rights of criminals before those of their victims, an ever-expanding welfare state that eroded the family and pushed fathers from their families, legalized abortion that cheapened human life and deemed unborn babies expendable when inconvenient, rampant drug use and licentiousness, deviance celebrated as the norm, all built on a foundation of moral relativism that can't distinguish between criminal and police.

Perhaps Maher wants to revisit the halcyon days when huge swaths of American cities were free-fire zones controlled by thugs while -- on the bright side! -- there were fewer prisons and criminals inhabiting them. I doubt anyone old enough to remember what it was like wants to live through that era again.

A Chinese solar farm that fries birds is OK, as is redrawing tortoise habitat boundaries to benefit political donors. But an American rancher grazing his cattle brings feds with sniper rifles.

If the forces deployed in and around the Nevadan's ranch had been deployed to Benghazi, it's likely Glen Doherty, Ty Woods, Sean Smith and Ambassador Christopher Stevens would be alive today.

If illegal aliens were grazing on the disputed property, there would not have been federal snipers perched nearby with American citizens in their sights.
