It is not that complicated. I believe they are allowing both sides of the buy or sell argument.

I don't know about the Motley Fool but I know Seeking Alpha wants to have both sides presented since many in the market these days are short stocks. I think they could make it a much better site if they had ways to rate the writers vs what they recommend but they want the readers to do it themselves. I've taken the Ben Stein approach and recommend SPY as that is the largest fund component of my newsletter core portfolios. I'd not be surprised if I beat 85% of what most there recommend so I'd like to have rankings

For me, the signal to noise level is too low to be very useful other than looking out for new ways to look at stocks on my radar.
