Ours is a full 1000 gallon on the bill.

When the drought happened two summers ago, our community had a free service available.

They came out an analysed my sprinkler systems.

I made 3 changes.

My rotating sprinkler heads were too controlled down. A sprinkler head should shoot water to the next sprinkler head. It should shoot droplets not mist. Mist evaporates into the air and is wasted.

I also loosened up my misters and in some places put soakers vs misters - soakers are more efficient (less evaporation).

Set your sprinkling system to go off early in the morning when it is coolest. If you do 30 minutes per zone - drop back to 2 10 minute applications. The first time zone wets the top soil the second time zone penetrates deeper in the ground.Deeper feeds the roots better and has less run off - thus less time sprinkling.

I now use timers and soaker hoses for my gardens - it works much better.
