They are wanting to ram NATO right up through Ukraine and into Moscow. Uh.. maybe if Putin wasn't so intent on forcing them back into it's sphere of influence, or had a better carrot to offer, maybe they wouldn't be inclined to associate with Europe.. In fact, their greatest strength is that these nations could act as "middle men" between Russia and Europe, letting each parade them with gifts and favorable trade conditions.. That would be their ideal situation.. But from what I see, Putin is not about to permit it. These countries are SEEKING NATO membership as a means of collective security against Putin's agenda.. No one is forcing them to join. A lot more carrot, and a lot less stick, would likely be to Putin's benefit. It won't happen under his rule, but Russia has a lot of work to do before any of it's former republics, or Warsaw Pact members, will ever trust them again.. The atrocities committed by Russia against these countries may have taken place under the facade of Communism, but it also took place before that.. It's not the political system that causes one people to brutalize a neighbor.. It's just the excuse to justify it. In that way, Putin has shown that Communism was not the reason Russia exploited them and committed genocide and ethnic cleansing of vast portions of their territory. As for Metacomet and the energy connection, I still stand by the belief that Ukraine's Nat Gas deposits are major factor in why Putin is pushing this confrontation. A huge deposit lies under E. Ukraine as well.. Hawk
