It was a private statement made by an asshole. This is another precedent setting event. There are over 311million assholes in the USA who make private statements and even dare to have private thoughts. There are lots of ways to deal with assholes without criminalizing them for what they think. However, I expect to see attempts to criminalize private thoughts soon, if that has not already occurred. I also expect Sterling to sue.

I can't recall any NBA or any other team OWNERS making statements like this

I don't either. By "have done worse" I don't mean making statements, I mean worse than just making a statement, cheating, borderline criminal activity, or actual crimes. Also I'm not limiting it to owners.

I do see how with or without any sanctions from the NBA it would be very difficult for him to continue to operate as an owner after making such a statement. No free agents would sign with the team, attendance would be down, TV ratings would be down, merchandise sales might fall through the floor, and just the general climate of hostility to himself that he created would cause problems (and none of those reactions would be at all unreasonable). I think it's best for all involved that he sell the team as soon as he can, and that until then he has little to nothing to do with managing it.

But actual criminals don't get lifetime bans, and he just mouthed off. Hateful bigoted mouthing off to be sure, but it seems like a lot of people have lost perspective on this.

NJ Democrat Caught on Tape, Fears Her Town May Become a “F—ing N—–town”
..............................................................................................................................

jammiewf.com

Clearly all of America must condemn yet another racist Democrat. What is wrong with these people?

A Michigan forensics lab has confirmed the woman heard on a phone message claiming she doesn’t want Belleville to turn into a “(expletive) n—- town” is actually town councilwoman and mayoral candidate Marie Strumolo Burke.

Edward Primeau, the executive director of Primeau Forensics, said today he is “85 percent” certain that Burke is the woman heard making several offensive remarks on the recording. The tape was authenticated Monday, Belleville Mayor Raymond Kimble said.

Kimble, who is running against Burke in the June election, said the recording was made sometime in 2013. In the phone call, the former chairman of the town’s planning board, Sam Papa, was leaving a message on Councilman Kevin Kennedy’s answering machine.

When the conversation turns to proposed tax changes, Burke can be heard screaming in the background: “This is terrible. This is terrible. This is gonna be a (expletive) n—- town.”

The comment is made at about 1:14 minute point into the recording.

Conveniently the Star-Ledger leaves out the part about her being a Democrat. Funny, that. We’ll see if the Democrats even acknowledge this:

Earlier this week, Belleville council members voted to request a censure from the Democratic National Committee of Strumolo Burke due to the purported comments.

Safe to say if an elected Republican was caught saying that every Republican in America would also be judged guilty.
