Scary AD

Today while looking through the newspaper saw a scary thing.

It was a big ad for Maxtor 6.4 GB yes 6.4 GB for the amazing price of

$279(No mail in rebate)

Just several months ago I would have thought that I would have had to wait 2 more years before I saw prices like that.

The second question I can take a stab at, but it is just speculation. Is $500 a low enough price point to significantly penetrate the so-called 50% of American households that do not have a PC? I fear that some percentage of this 50% may not own a computer because they don't yet see the need. Perhaps that is the answer. The need for a PC in every home or in every kitchen will increase--of course I think so because I am an enthusiast. What will be the catalyst for a PC in 80% of households like a VCR or TV? Probably further convergence of PCTV at low price points. Maybe if computers stay in their current state there really isn't any price point that would push someone into buying one for the first time or for their home until it can make breakfast, talk back, or broadcast crisp and clear pay-per-view. Broadening the market won't happen overnight I think--over the next five-ten years it will though. Oh, and disk drives will still be needed in some form.
