Business expenses as deductions? Of course you're entitled to them. They are costs to produce revenue. I would point out that the process of determining net income predates the federal income tax by at least six centuries. Congress didn't create that process.

My person view is that church contributions should be deductible to the extent they are used for charitable purposes. I do not see that buying real estate is a charitable purpose. However, things get very complicated when the tax law starts trying to address what is and what isn't charitable.
