To All. This price and the market action lately is pure, unfettered and total lunacy. The sellers into this weakness will be the unfortunate souls, the same idiots who gloat now and enjoy saying I told you so. Long term INVESTORS will be the ones who eventually are rewarded by their investment in the world's premier tech company.

Lee - Re: "What will Merced's competition be when it arrives? Will it be processors from Sun and IBM?"

Realistically, the only real competition will be SUN's UltraSparc III. SUN is targeting this chip for server applications with very high numbers of parallel processors.

Moreover, SUN is determined to make this compatible with existing SOLARIS operating systems.

DEC's Alpha will be on life support if and when Intel acquires the DEC Fab and the manufacturing of that chip.

Re: "...when does the market typically start to value upcoming product introductions such as merced? "

In general, the "market" doesn't recognize the impact of new generation Intel processors until 12 to 18 months or more after the devices first ship.

The 80486 began shipping in mid to late 1989 and Intel's stock didn't kick into gear until 1992.

The Pentium was launched in May 1993 and Intel's stock didn't get moving until January 1995.

The Pentium Pro was launched in late 1995 and the stock began to kick into gear in late 1996.
