That is way too simplistic. You cannot broad brush an entire population like that.

First: Harper's Index: Percentage of US convicts exonerated last year who had previously pleaded guilty without a trial: 17%!

People commit crimes for many reasons that a sophisticated civilized society would understand. And it ranges all the way from a simple lack of education to mental retardation, being psychotic, being abused as a child, having a brain tumor, being innocent and a mistake, corrupt police setting a person up, corrupt jury, and stupid laws like putting people in jail for non violent crime like smoking pot.

We have way too many prisoners as it is. More than any other country.

All of these things must be taken into account. We have a good tradition in this country where we say we would rather let 9 guilty people go free than convict one innocent person.

The more complex one sees the world with an eye toward humanity, the more social justice and the nicer the society will be to live in.

Mankind has been barbaric until only recently. Habeas Corpus was a huge deal, and we only ended slavery 150 years ago. Imagine that!

But conservatives only see punishment. They do like their punishment and violence.

PS kids raised gently do a lot better in life than kids raised with hard parents.

They go to prison and continue to murder and viciously assault others. Rehabilitate means to return to it's former state. Prisons are full of treatment programs.

The purpose of prisons is to isolate the criminal from innocent society and to act as a deterrent to future bad behavior. The best deterrent for a vicious animal is to execute it.

>>>"Prisons are full of treatment programs. "

Heinous crime is a special category in that there are no treatment programs that can result in a resolution to the injustice or a reconciliation for the criminal and society at large. Koan's fall back is, "well lets just make life in prison the maximum punishment" and try to work with that, which would be fine with me if there were any hope for that solution to result in a just outcome. Heinous crime, places the perpetrator in a category of justice which should be labeled "abandon all hope yee who enter here."
