Well you can go back to Solon, Plato, Aristotle & Socrates & Diogenes, or you can forward 4 centuries up to Musonius Rufus who trained Epictetus who then is a major influence shaping Marcus Aurelius the great Emperor's thought. Epictetus thought alone is enough to drown Christianity & Islam together in its practical thought and again with his cosmology/harmony of nature, pacifist philosophers are to me the natural offshoot of 1000's of years of wars.

Think of 8 centuries of emotional distortion, suppression of literature & threats of hell, you bet they were jumping for joy when Constantinople fell to the Turks & all those Classical writings came influxing in to give them something real to work & hope for....in the real world.
