Private here is vague. It can mean not open to the general public (in which case air force bases might be private, but of course that isn't what we are talking about here. It can mean not directly and totally government owned (in which case there are major private airports). It can mean not at all owned by government, or not largely financed by governments (in which case most major airports are not private).

Sydney Airport might be considered private, at least the airport management company is privately owned (by a "public corporation", more ambiguity in terms of the word private).

As for monopolies, if private airport owners/managers drastically overcharge they will drive airlines to use different airports (at least for large cities witch have multiple airports, and for transfer points large and small). Yes customers are likely to pay a bit more in some cases, but if taxpayers pay less that balances out.

They're all Marxists, statist, evil power hungry control freaks trying to kill the private sector.

Not universally, or probably even mostly that, esp not the "Marxist" and "trying to kill the private sector" part (control freaks is a bit more common). But they don't have to be a bunch of Marxists out to kill the private sector in order to want to build and control airports, they just have to have a desire to get in to that area, and/or the belief that its a function that can only be done well by governments.
