A commentary on MS regarding NC's I didn't bother to post when I read it Thursday

It makes me wonder if people are waging wars of
ideals against Microsoft because their own products and ideas
don't look as good without that sweaty emotional sheen on them.

In the late 80's there were several excellent commercial clones of Lotus 1-2-3 on the market. VP-Planner from an outfit called Paperback Software was technically superior in several ways, notably the introdution of 3-dimensional spreadsheets and the active storage of embedded databases in a .dbf format. Lotus sued on "look and feel" issues and won despite the added features.

There is a fine line to be walked when going for increased compatibility. Step outside the narrow path and Microsoft will see you in court.

Footnote to story. To the best of my knowledge Lotus never did offer a competitive upgrade to the clone owners ...but Microsoft did! When Windows took off, one could still upgrade from VP-Planner to Excel, and still read and write to all the old files. To this day Lotus spits back a message about illegal file formats and a stern warning not to use that product.

Talk about sore winners.
