Yes, although I keep an open mind that there are other approaches.

The Government forced the South to free slaves and in the process destroyed one of the most vibrant cultures and economies in the world at that time. Other governments were faced with the same issue at the same time and managed a smooth transition from slavery to freedom, and consequently do not have bad race relations issues. Ancient cultures were mostly founded upon slavery and managed to transition to a free population without civil war.

The point being there might have been better ways to make that transition without government force. Under the circumstance we will never know. The trend was clearly in that direction with or without government enforcement. We are now finding that taking the time to turn hearts and minds in the right direction is a much more realistic approach than force.

You are obviously resentful that it took force. Can you imagine a better modern culture if we had been able to accomplish the hearts and minds thing? Martin Luther King was pushing for that.
