>> The point being there might have been better ways to make that transition without government force. Under the circumstance we will never know. The trend was clearly in that direction with or without government enforcement. We are now finding that taking the time to turn hearts and minds in the right direction is a much more realistic approach than force.

The Civil War era is a piece of our history I've read very little about -- a few biographies like Frederick Douglas and Grant and a couple others. One day, I plan to get around to it.

But my impression is that it [slavery] was coming to an end either way, and the war was a waste of a lot of human life and property. While the frequently made argument is that it was about states' rights, I really think it was a clash of two disparate economies. States rights clearly was at issue. Slavery was clearly an issue. But in the North everyone was on someone else's time. In the South, you had slaves but you also had a ton of people who were just doing their own things to get by. Just two different kinds of civilization.

Slavery is not something you take your time with. It is too horrible. would you take time stopping a person raping a woman?

In fact what the government should have done the minute someone, president, congress, had the insight and power to do something was to demand it end that very minute. The south should not have been given even one minute to end it.

And it should have been a non negotiable ultimatum. Either you end it "this minute" or we will force you to.

Period. And pretty much the same with institutional segregation.

And anyone who does not understand that needs to do some serious introspection.

one-less: Yes, although I keep an open mind that there are other approaches.

The Government forced the South to free slaves and in the process destroyed one of the most vibrant cultures and economies in the world at that time. Other governments were faced with the same issue at the same time and managed a smooth transition from slavery to freedom, and consequently do not have bad race relations issues. Ancient cultures were mostly founded upon slavery and managed to transition to a free population without civil war.

The point being there might have been better ways to make that transition without government force. Under the circumstance we will never know. The trend was clearly in that direction with or without government enforcement. We are now finding that taking the time to turn hearts and minds in the right direction is a much more realistic approach than force.

You are obviously resentful that it took force. Can you imagine a better modern culture if we had been able to accomplish the hearts and minds thing? Martin Luther King was pushing for that.
