The market for IoT (Internet of Things) devices is expected to stage a major uptick in the next 2-3 years. STMicroelectronics is ready to offer an assortment of key components such as sensors, low-power MCUs and wireless networking devices for the booming market, accord to company executive vice president Francois Guibert.

While companies like Qualcomm and MediaTek are pushing sales of their reference designs for IoT and wearable devices, STMicroelectronics has been focusing on deploying a comprehensive line of peripheral products, with which it can develop integrated modules for applications in the telemetry, home network gateway, renewable energy and hybrid vehicle sectors, among others, Guibert said.

In Taiwan, STMicroelectronics has begun cooperating with local clients in the home network gateway sector, utilizing current residential power lines as wireless communication channels. STMicroelectronics is also involved in the Taipei U-bike bicycle rental system, one of the best cases for the demonstration of a smart city.

For the China market, STMicroelectronics is currently focusing on a number of segments, including smart meters, street lighting and hybrid vehicles, to expand its presence in the market. With regard to smart meters, STMicroelectronics is developing products that meet the specification requirements set up by the central and local governments for penetration into China's smart meter market.

Meanwhile, STMicroelectronics is currently holding a leading position in the automotive electronics sector and will continue to sharpen its advantages in the field given demand for in-car electronics devices is expected to grow significantly in the future driven by the rise of automotive infotainment and connected telematics devices, Guibert commented.

They are getting crushed in AH on what looks like a big earnings miss. A quick check with Yahoo! and it seems they beat on revenue but the margins are lower due to the annual price cut. The outlook is also a penny lower than low estimate range so that may hurt also. I'll have to read the CC transcript or listen today ... maybe they will say something that will reverse the carnage... down 19% in AH....
FNSR is my largest holding (common and options). Datacom has been very strong but telecom has been weighing on its growth. Major customer CIEN (mostly telecom) just blew away its numbers on June 5 which bodes well for FNSR's telecom segment. PEG ratio (Yahoo data) is 0.62 which is exceptionally low for a company with the #1 share in optical components ( cf. JDSU at 1.29).FNSR is extremely volatile with relatively low volume and high short interest (6.5 days currently) so it's not for the faint of heart.
