If so many people didn't confuse believing in an invisible buddy, with actual proof of said buddy, I wouldn't need to say it so often. Every 3 year old will swear to you Santa exists. And there are plenty of adults who will swear to you there were Iraqis on the 9/11 planes. People believe crazy shit all the time. But try to get them to realize it. And if they want to cherish their irrational beliefs in private, or somewhere off this thread, no problem. I'm not going to follow anyone off this thread to disabuse them of anything- no matter how insane it is. But here? Here we have an invisible friend bullshit free zone.

"What you need is proof, any proof, that he, she or it exists. "

Maybe we have found The Gods, and Fred and Wilma are very, very black.

  • I have no doubt that in reality the future will be vastly more surprising than anything I can imagine. Now my own suspicion is that the Universe is not only queerer than we suppose, but queerer than we can suppose.

JBS Haldane

You've said that dark matter and dark energy should be renamed "Fred" and "Wilma." Care to elaborate on that?

Tyson: Yeah, because if I say "dark matter" you say "What kind of matter is that?" Well, we don't even know if it's matter. It's really dark gravity. Dark matter is a misleading term. There is so much first impression in the word. People ask "What do dark matter and dark energy have in common?" because they sound the same.

If I called them Fred and Wilma you wouldn't ask what they have in common. You'd ask about them separately. But because they both have the word "dark" in them, people think they're related. Maybe they are, but at the moment there's no evidence that's at all the case. These are two entities that got involved in the name game earlier than I think they should have.

Koan, perhaps my wording was too direct and offended you. If so, I apologize.

What I was trying to say was simply that to a large extent God and religion are apples and oranges. There's God, on the one hand.....................and then there's religion, on the other.....and sometimes "never the twain shall meet".
