Dale was still here when I left. In fact, I've been wondering what happened to him since he doesn't seem to be here. Did something happen to him in the Czech Republic?

I think it likely this is exactly how it happened, i.e. food scarcity. Fasting would be a form of forced sharing among a tribal group of people. For the purpose of debate, I would submit it doesn't preclude a God being involved though. Tribal leaders often were shamans of some ilk, a person the rest considered able to commune with the spirits. The leader might have been talking to God in request for insight because his tribe was stealing and fighting over food. And some rotational scheme of fasting comes into his head. This seems like it would be obvious to any thinking person, but the average IQ three or four thousand years ago was probably closer to 70 than the 100 of today.

Also, food scarcity as an orginal impetus to fasting doesn't explain why it continued on.
