Smart people can be deluded by wishful thinking.

I agree. I still believe the neocons who rushed us into that war did so with deliberate malice aforethought.
And the media helped them, by passive 'patriotic' coverage.
I personally also still believe that the Bush inner group made huge profits off the enterprise. Some of it was obvious, such as the no bid contracts to Halliburton. But Rumsfeld and Bush himself were also well positioned to make big money. The Carlyle Group alone (Bush Senior was a board member) made nearly a billion dollars in two years.
Easy now to discount their actions as stupidity.
One side effect of all this may be to bring back to public attention the Iraq debacle. Might help Democrats
this fall. Knock on wood :)

<<<<< Wolfowitz was not dumb. So I continue to believe that it was a deliberately fraudulent act rather than a dumb one>>>>

I agree. What I don't get is why he continually gets called in and in all seriousness ask what he thinks of the current situation. Even if he is an expert, once you lie to the entire nation - why should we ever believe anything he says?

I always felt Wolfowitz was just an agent of Israel, embedded in the US government, doing his job. They wanted the US in the ME, and saw it happening after 9/11.
