Powell lost ALL respect I had for him after he got up there and told the world that Saddam had those mobile labs and missiles.

I KNEW that was absurd by that time.

You hold a very cynical view. I don't.

It certainly wasn't absurd; I have great confidence Powell wouldn't have said it had he not believed and neither would Bush.

George Tenet was the big failure in all of this. One can argue about whether Tenet was getting pressure from people within the administration. I don't believe that is credible but I understand why people argue about it.

In retrospect, Tenet was the point of failure in a hell of a lot of places during the years he ran CIA. I believe when the history is written (not the pseudo-history we hear today), Tenet will bear a great deal of responsibility for the failures leading up to both 9/11 and the Iraq War.

My personal view is that none of the top people in the WH (Bush, Cheney, Rice, Powell, some others) would have moved forward with the war were it not for bad information from CIA and other agencies. Even though we needed to remove Saddam, had there not been credible intelligence to support the war it wouldn't have happened.

When the top guy at CIA says, "It is a slam dunk" you can't very well ignore it, particularly after the intelligence failures that resulted in 9/11. You've got a guy standing there telling you there is a problem that needs attention, and it would have been incompetent had Bush not listened to him.
