Larry, thot I'd put in my $.02 worth. I don't think WFR will show a "significant" profit for at least 2 Q, and all of 98 will be pretty anemic. Things will be a lot better in 99 and going forward. A lot depends on balancing act they are doing between a big capacity expansion among wafer makers and the general trend toward yield improvements and smaller line rules in the industry. Quality will be the key. Demand for epi wafers will continue to grow and a premium will be paid for defect free material.
Process improvements are a major focus now, especially in the run up to 300mm.

Larry!

Welcome. While we may have not always agreed on everything in the past, your input & learned opinion has always been welcomed on this
thread.

WFR is suffering from the same thing MU is. Remember the old Alka
Seltzer commercials of the early 1970's? IMO, there are a lot of companies out there saying: "I can't believe I built the WHOLE THING."

While I only "claim" to know something about HK & China, I can tell you from what I am reading & the daily service I pay for, there is no
evidence of the big slowdown mentioned in many analysts reports. Granted, SE Asia comprises far more countries. But, IMO, China demand
is more than enough to keep many companies happy. China is, as of my report dated 12/16/97, expected to lower interest rates later this week. (Source is subscription service at asiawind.com )

Korea has problems, IMO. Imagine if the entire U.S. economy were MU
and half rotten cabbage buried in the ground. (called "Kim Chee").
U.S. would also have trouble. (over simplified, but not too far off.)

IMO, no quick turnaround for WFR in next few months. I still believe
they are a solid company with a fine product and darn good people working for them.

Just My Opinion.

Doug
