We had low casualties because the opposition did not get support from anyone, not even Iran who actually helped US. If the Russians had decided to arm the Afghans, you would have seen a very different outcome. Lack of support is the big difference between Afghanistan and Vietnam. Just look at how much havoc even a little support can create...as evidenced from the Saudi support of the opposition in Iraq and Syria.

Re: I've got some money I need to invest in a few months. Detroit is a good buy, even now. Canadian and Australian markets are also good buys. I'd go with Australia to decouple more from USD. If you want to invest in natural resources, better to find good natural resource stocks/index in Canada and Australia. JMO.
