Is it a good idea that so many critical devices will be made outside the US?

Lenovo is still expecting to close the $2.3B deal on IBM’s ( IBM) low-end server business this year, although the acquisition is still being investigated by the U.S. for national-security risks. One of the main concerns is that IBM's servers are used in U.S. data centers that support the Pentagon's computer networks. Lenovo ( OTCPK:LNVGF) is also attempting to obtain regulatory approval to buy Google's ( GOOG, GOOGL) Motorola Mobility, in another multi-billion-dollar acquisition valued at $2.9B.

I remember in the "old days" of the cold war, we sold $350 hermetic optocouplers to military contractors. One of my designs went into the Cruise Missile in the 1980s. If I recall correctly, most of the 100x extra cost was for burn-in and test to eliminate infant failures in addition to the extra cost for the packaging. One stipulation was ALL content had to be made and tested in the US so the supply would not vanish should there be another world war.
