I finally found Fosback's book and nearly choked on the dust that had collected at that end of the book shelf. I also found where I'd been using a napkin as a book mark, so I must have found it tasty reading! :-)

After looking at the section on Hi/Low Logic, I see exactly what you mean- that you wouldn't know what you had if you used the difference between the 2. It would completely defeat the purpose and ignore the underlying logic. In the context of Fosback's thinking it would seem that annual year-end increases should project greater likelihood of contraction in the ensuing months. But that's when the January effect is flying and it usually carries on for 6 - 8 weeks. Hmmmm. Me thinks I had a bad idea.
