A group of Jehovah's Witness members have filed suit in Federal Court asserting their Constitutional right to reduce their income tax obligation by any percentage of Federal funding used to support military actions or defense preparedness.

"Being forced to pay personal and corporate income taxes used to support military and defense activity is deeply offensive to us and a violation of our deeply held religious beliefs," the group's attorney Steve Lattimore said today in a released statement. Jehovah's Witness members have always refused to join the U.S. military, even when this has meant imprisonment.

Many legal analysts have been expecting an increasing number of similar lawsuits to be filed after the Supreme Court recently ruled that the plaintiff corporation Hobby Lobby are not obliged to pay any government tax or penalties resulting from their failure to provide employees medical insurance which include coverage for birth control pills.

"We are gratified that the Supreme Court has finally recognized the importance of religious beliefs and we are confident that the local District Court will confirm our right to withhold any taxes used to support military spending. If the District Court does not affirm our religious restrictions, we're confident the Supreme Court will continue to support religious liberty and take our case on appeal, deciding in our favor."
