Things aren't going as well as they had hoped. Hamas has learned from what happened in Lebanon. There is a greater tendency for them to stand and fight instead of vanishing as soon as the an armored vehicle show up, for example. As a result the casualty rate for the IDF is higher than expected. Israelis are starting to worry about mission creep. This was only supposed to last a week or so. Now it is slowly creeping towards a re-occupation. And to re-occupy Gaza is going to cause a lot of people to die. The hardliners wanted this. Just like they wanted Lebanon. This could be it for their influence. Might not. Probably not. But...
