.. if one is engaged in war that they should do whatever it takes to win and that there are no rules.

Similarly, it should be established, as it apparently isn't now, as far as the US is concerned..

Wars are violent exercises, without rules, to be sure, to be employed strictly as a defensive strategy, when there is an imminent threat of annihilation or profound damage or destruction to the mainland of the US itself

...any other extension of power to "protect our interests" or to be a political charade to get re-elected, as the Iraq incident was/is, or any other purpose, should not be called a war

..in fact, they are activities that should be avoided at any cost

To forfeit American lives when there is no immediate threat is a despicable waste of our human capital

..to fail to care for the halt and lame that are created as a result of these unnecessary political adventures, should be a source of shame for all Americans

I don't mind some rules. I'm not big on shooting captives or of using chemical and biological weapons, nor uranium, depleted or full strength. We've always done as much as it takes to at least break even before our direct role ended. We dropped a lot of bombs on Hanoi, and there have been more than too many civilian deaths in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Gaza's pretty complicated. It's OK to warn civilians, but, where are they gonna go? Refugees usually head for the borders, which, in this case, are closed by Egypt and Israel. If Israel is being surgical, they are deliberately destroying the entire infrastructure, and, if they aren't, maybe we need to sell them drones, so they don't have to use imprecise tanks and artillery and ships. If Hamas didn't fire from civilian areas, and if they used the tunnels as bomb shelters for civilians, lives could be saved.

You have to have rules in war.

In fact I would say especially in war.

We used to bomb cities with abandon in war. Today we don't do that so much.

Curtis Lemay's horrendous behavior would never be countenanced today.

In fact our behavior in Viet Nam would not be acceptable today, I think, I hope.

We must always strive for humanity whenever we can.

And we should never let the junk yard right wing drag us down to their level.

<<I am not saying that the United States was wrong in using every weapon available to win the war.

I am saying that if one is engaged in war that they should do whatever it takes to win and that there are no rules.

If you add rules then war becomes a sporting event like football.>>
