Is it possible iPhones are doing well with upper-income Chinese who are attracted to more to the American brand than the merits of the phone itself? If so, how durable will this be once those people are tapped?

Isn't the brand part of the merit of the iPhone? What makes you think that brand can or should be separated?

IMO, the bear argument in China is that Apple can't compete with the cheap smartphones, the bull argument is that Apple doesn't compete with the cheap smartphones. It's the same argument everywhere actually. I take it for granted that a premium market segment exists in all regions, and it appears to be growing in China (ie, not "tapped.")
